Ministries, Niagara College discuss curricula for hospitality institute
The Ministries of Education and Tourism, Industry and Commerce yesterday met with representatives of Canada’s Niagara College to discuss curricula for the Hospitality and Tourism Training Institute (HTTI), which is being built at Port Mourant, Region Six.
According to a Ministry of Education release, discussions focused on aligning the institute’s training programmes with the needs of Guyana’s hospitality and tourism sector, while incorporating relevant international standards and industry practices.
Education Minister Sonia Parag and Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Susan Rodrigues led the meeting at the Education Ministry’s boardroom.
The engagement formed part of Niagara College’s first in-country stakeholder mission, which runs from September 28 to October 2. The team is consulting government agencies, educational institutions, employers and industry representatives to guide the development of programmes.
Proposed areas of training include hospitality operations, culinary arts, food and beverage services, tourism and resort operations, customer service and related technical skills.
The ministry said attention is also being given to opportunities to combine classroom instruction with workplace experience, emerging technologies and training pathways that address current and future workforce needs.
The curricula exercise forms part of institutional strengthening under the HTTI project and complements the ongoing construction and equipping of the institute, the release stated.
Niagara College was represented at the meeting by curriculum development expert Joyce Bott and hospitality expert Eric Mauke.
Also attending were Education Ministry Permanent Secretary Shannielle Hoosein-Outar, Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain and Chief Planning Officer Miskcha White-Griffith; Tourism Ministry Permanent Secretary Roger Rogers; Guyana Tourism Authority Director Kamrul Baksh; and Director of Tourism Sunalie Raghubar.
The Education Ministry said it is also working with secondary schools and technical and vocational education institutions to support the development of a skilled workforce for the sector.
