Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed is among three men in Police custody following an alleged gunshot incident on Barr Street, Kitty, Georgetown, late Monday night.
According to Police Headquarters, the incident occurred at approximately 23:45 hrs. Preliminary investigations revealed that Head of Special Branch, Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, was at his Barr Street residence when he observed a black Toyota Allion motor car bearing registration number PXX 5300 travelling slowly along the street.
The car reportedly passed his residence before returning to the area shortly after.
Police said that as the car approached the residence for a second time, Narine heard what appeared to be a gunshot. He reportedly took cover before discharging several rounds from his service firearm in the direction of the vehicle, which subsequently drove away.
Police later intercepted the vehicle at the junction of Vlissengen Road and Sandy Babb Street, Kitty.
The three occupants were identified as the Opposition Leader; Mario Mohamed, 25, of Timehri, East Bank Demerara; and Eugene Thorne, 35, a driver, also of Timehri.
The men were arrested and escorted to the Kitty Police Station.
A search of the motor car, conducted in the presence of the three occupants, reportedly led to the discovery of a .32 Taurus pistol without a serial number and three live rounds of .32 ammunition. The men were subsequently arrested in connection with the alleged possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence.
During the investigation, Police also recovered one .32 spent shell on the southern side of Barr Street, obliquely opposite Narine’s residence. Four spent 9mm shells were also recovered.
The firearm, ammunition and spent shells were lodged for ballistic examination, while CCTV footage from the area is expected to be reviewed as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The three men remain in Police custody as investigations continue.
