Dear Editor,
The Commissioner of Police appears to have more influence over the current scandal involving the Deputy Commissioner than the Minister with responsibility over the GPF. It is the Minister’s decision as to whether the Deputy Commissioner goes on leave while the investigation continues. The Commissioner has a seat at the table, but the final decision must sit within the President’s Cabinet if there is a gap in the leadership structure as there currently is. If the Minister cannot handle the influence of the Commissioner in this matter, then the Minister must seek guidance and assistance from the President and the Attorney General.
It is also clear that when a mistake is made that the person making that mistake must own up to it and self-correct. There is no shame in adjusting one’s position quickly after a mistake is discovered. Trying to cover it up only makes the situation worse and conveys the message that there is something being hidden. Thus, resulting in the public losing confidence in that person’s integrity, honesty, and ability to deal effectively with important matters. It is very disappointing to see that someone who does have in depth knowledge of the law appearing to be persuaded by a third party who would prefer to diminish the importance and gravity of the current allegations against a fellow officer.
The current handling of the scandal is less than adequate and swift changes must occur if the Minister and the Ali Administration are to save face. The voters, and especially the female voters, will not forget nor forgive any further mishandling of this serious matter. It may also be time for a new Commissioner to be appointed. The number of serious scandals involving the GPF has been one too many. The GPF needs stronger leadership.
With concern,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
