A mother and her two sons were among five people remanded to prison on Friday in connection with the murder of 23-year-old fisherman Chittesh Sukhai, also known as “Rohan” and “Marsho.”
Those who appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy are: Zynette Baichu, 47, a housewife; brothers Mohan Narine, and Gowcharran Narine; Mahendra Budhram; and Kumar Jailall, all of Friendship Village, Corentyne.
The court heard that on September 28, 2026, while at Friendship Village, the five accused individuals murdered Sukhai. They were not required to plead to the indictable charge.
In September, Police said that several men allegedly arrived at Friendship Village armed with cutlasses shortly after Sukhai was involved in an argument with a female relative. Sukhai was reportedly chopped multiple times about his body before the individuals fled the scene. He later collapsed in a nearby yard.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Shinel Mathieson told the court that the post-mortem examination report and forensic laboratory results are still outstanding for the case file. The prosecutor also said legal advice had already been sought.
The accused were remanded to prison and are scheduled to return to court on November 9.
Police previously reported that around 23:40 hours on September 28, Sukhai was involved in an argument with a female relative at Friendship Village when several men allegedly arrived armed with cutlasses.
Sukhai was reportedly chopped several times on his body before running from the scene and collapsing in a nearby yard.
He was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
Two cutlasses suspected to have been used in the attack were recovered in the vicinity.
The five accused were subsequently arrested and charged.
