(Kaieteur News) – A 29-year-old mother of one says she is living in fear that years of alleged abuse and attacks by her former partner could eventually end with her being killed.
Alicia Gobin says the latest incident, a fire at her unfinished home at Schoonord, West Bank Demerara, at about 3:43 a.m. on Sunday has left her terrified that the situation is escalating beyond property damage.
She alleges that her former partner, a 39-year-old major state contractor, was behind the fire and a series of other attacks against her and members of her family over the years.
Efforts by this publication to contact the man for a response to the allegations proved futile.
Gobin said she fears that the man, whom she alleges has strong political connections, could eventually arrange for someone else to harm her.
“Whenever he do this thing, he leave the country. He don’t be here. He’s an American,” Gobin stated. “Apart from all this, I’m scared for my life… because it’s just like this, he could leave and put somebody to kill me. Because he desperately need to take my baby away now.”
The Schoonord fire was the fifth recorded attempt at arson that Gobin says has been directed at her or her immediate family.
On August 24 and 28, 2025, two separate attempts were allegedly made to set fire to the Middle Road, La Penitence home of Gobin’s 78-year-old grandmother, where her disabled mother also lives.
Gobin said fires were set directly at the entrance gate on both occasions, potentially blocking any means of escape by the occupants. Reports were subsequently made at the Ruimveldt Police Station.
In another incident in August 2025, a minibus belonging to Gobin’s brother-in-law was completely destroyed by fire at La Grange, West Bank Demerara.
Gobin said later that same night, after she and her sister returned home from inspecting the burnt vehicle, the motor vehicle they had travelled in was also set on fire outside their residence.
She alleges that the attacks are part of a much longer pattern of physical, verbal and psychological abuse during and after their six-year relationship.
Gobin said she made numerous reports to the police, senior law enforcement officials and child protection authorities and also obtained a court-issued restraining order in March 2026.
However, she said the order was repeatedly breached without effective police intervention.
She also alleges that her former partner’s wealth, status as a major state contractor and political connections have made it difficult for her be protected.
Gobin raised concerns about his alleged connections to a government minister and said she believes those connections have kept him away from accountability.
She said mechanics discovered hidden microphones and GPS tracking devices spliced into the dashboard wiring of her Toyota Tacoma. She said the surveillance equipment was connected to secondary batteries so that it could continue operating even when the vehicle was switched off. She also alleged that pen-style recording devices were planted inside her home.
Gobin further claims that her former partner accessed her private WhatsApp messages, phone records and SIM-card information through contacts at local telecommunications providers and created fake TikTok, Instagram and Facebook accounts using her name.
On one occasion, she said, he entered her kitchen, picked up a meat cleaver and used it to damage her truck, smashing the windshield and side mirrors.
She also noted that he physically assaulted her on her bed while their infant was present.
In another frightening incident, Gobin said remote vehicle kill-switches were activated while she was driving at night, leaving her stranded on public roads.
She further claimed that her former partner repeatedly took their young child without her consent for weeks at a time, including taking the child across international borders to Suriname, Brazil and the United States.
Gobin said she sought assistance from the Child Care and Protection Agency, immigration authorities and the police, but said her complaints fell on deaf ears.
She said an officer identified repeatedly told her that both parents had equal rights and required her to accommodate the child’s father.
Gobin also noted that during an intervention at the Child Care office, she was required to pay $300,000 to replace vehicle tracking wires she had removed before officials would allow her to retrieve her infant son.
She said she also made direct reports to senior commanders within the Guyana Police Force and other high-ranking officials.
Despite those reports and the restraining order, Gobin said she remains afraid that the attacks will continue.
The case has now prompted calls for an independent investigation into the handling of Gobin’s complaints.
Opposition leaders and Shadow Minister for Human Services Natasha Singh-Lewis are calling for an immediate investigation into the conduct of Division 4A police officers and the Child Care and Protection Agency.
Questions are also being raised about the responsibility of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, headed by Dr. Vindya Persaud, and the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, headed by Minister Oneidge Waldron, particularly over allegations that individuals with significant business and political connections are able to evade accountability while victims of domestic abuse struggle to obtain protection.
Gobin said she does not know what will happen next and fears that the next attack may not be against a vehicle, a house or another piece of property, but against her life.
