Guyana’s senior men’s national basketball team has been officially named as a replacement team for the second round of the FIBA AmeriCup 2029 Pre-Qualifiers following the withdrawal of Antigua and Barbuda.
The national side earned the call-up after being identified as the next highest-ranked men’s team in the Caribbean, highlighting the programme’s continued regional development.
Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) President Michael Singh welcomed the development while acknowledging the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the entry.
“While we never wish for a situation where a fellow National Federation has to withdraw, this is a tremendous opportunity for our Senior Men’s National Team to continue their journey toward the FIBA AmeriCup 2029,” Singh said, confirming that the federation has immediately shifted its focus to preparations for the upcoming window.
Guyana will compete in Group A at the Polideportivo Alexis Arguello in Managua, Nicaragua.
The tournament window is scheduled for November 27–29, 2026, with the squad arriving on November 25 before departing on November 30.
In Group A, Guyana will face host Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Jamaica. Meanwhile, Group B action will unfold at the Gimnasio Ciudad de La Asuncion in Isla Margarita, Venezuela, featuring host Venezuela alongside Cuba, Barbados, and Ecuador.
The eight-nation field will contest a round-robin format across the two groups, with each team playing three matches.
The top two finishers from each group will advance directly to the FIBA AmeriCup 2029 Qualifiers, which are set to tip off in November 2027.
The GBF is finalising key preparations, including player selection, registration, travel logistics, and delegation coordination under FIBA guidelines, as the team looks to make its mark on the continental stage. (Modified Press Release)
