Neron Barrow

Golden Jaguars forward Neron Barrow has  retained Canadian lawyer Andrew Werners and is expected to pursue legal action against the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) following his refusal of entry into Puerto Rico while travelling on national duty.

According to information received by this publication, legal action is anticipated. However, a formal filing, the proposed claims and the forum in which any proceedings would be brought have not been confirmed.

Werners has publicly identified Barrow as a client of Pitchside Sports Consulting and raised questions about the preparations made before his September 29 journey. The GFF has issued a statement setting out its response to the immigration incident, but questions submitted by this publication on Wednesday, September 30, remained without direct answers at the time of publication.

In his public account, Werners said Barrow was instructed by the team manager to provide his current visa information before travelling. He alleged that neither the manager nor the federation raised an objection before the player boarded the flight.

Werners questioned what checks had been conducted, whether Barrow’s documents had been reviewed and whether his eligibility to enter Puerto Rico had been verified. The account concerning those preparations has not been independently verified.

The incident occurred after the Golden Jaguars left Dominica on September 29 following victories over Puerto Rico and the Cayman Islands in their Concacaf Nations League B campaign.

A source close to Barrow said he travelled onward with other players without an accompanying coach or management official. According to the source, Barrow held a C-1 visa and was informed by immigration authorities that it could not be used for his intended entry.

The GFF acknowledged in its Wednesday evening statement that Barrow was denied entry because of a visa-related matter. It said he was detained and processed by immigration authorities for more than five hours before being released into the supervision of Inter-Caribbean Airlines.

Werners described the detention as lasting more than seven hours. An earlier source account placed it from around midday until after 5:00 p.m. A precise timeline has not been independently established.

Barrow’s sister initially raised concerns through a Facebook statement, saying her brother called her while being held and sounded confused and worried.

She said she contacted another player, who explained that teammates had unsuccessfully tried to determine whether fees or other requirements could be addressed to assist Barrow. According to her account, the other players eventually continued their journey while he remained with immigration authorities.

Her concerns included the guidance provided before departure and the assistance available when the problem arose. She acknowledged that logistical reasons could explain officials travelling separately, but said players should have appropriate support while representing Guyana.

“I am not asking for special treatment for my brother. I am asking for fair treatment,” she wrote.

The GFF said Barrow was not permitted to make telephone calls or communicate directly with team management during detention. It maintained that efforts to establish contact and provide assistance were restricted by immigration protocols.

A source close to Barrow had said he did not have access to his phone and had to request calls through the authorities. The timing and circumstances of the call described by his sister remain unclear.

According to the federation, management established contact after Barrow was released into the airline’s supervision. It said the team manager then maintained communication with him and worked to arrange his return.

GFF credited Inter-Caribbean Airlines with coordinating his initial travel from Puerto Rico and facilitating accommodation. The federation said it subsequently secured his onward flight to Guyana and announced that he was scheduled to arrive on Wednesday evening, September 30.

Werners’ account describes a return journey from Puerto Rico to Tortola, including an overnight stay, followed by travel through Barbados and onward to Guyana.

The federation said that, based on communication between Barrow and the team manager following his release, it understood he had not been mistreated during immigration detention. It nevertheless acknowledged that being detained and denied entry, with communication restricted, would have been distressing for him and his family.

GFF maintained that every reasonable effort had been made to monitor the situation, assist when access became possible and arrange his safe return. It also explained that it could not override decisions made by foreign immigration authorities.

The federation declined to disclose the specific circumstances of Barrow’s visa matter without his express permission, citing his privacy.

Werners’ criticism focused on preparations before departure. He argued that Barrow’s eventual return home did not resolve questions about travel administration and the checks undertaken before the journey.

Separate concerns were raised about Barrow’s involvement with the squad. His sister said he told her he had been excluded from training sessions because his GPS numbers were considered low and instructed to sit in the stands to analyse the last match in Dominica.

A source close to Barrow gave a similar account of the match instruction. These allegations remain unverified and were not addressed in the GFF statement.

Werners said this was Barrow’s third national-team call-up and that, after not featuring against the Cayman Islands, the player had been told he would receive an opportunity to play in Puerto Rico.

He also described Barrow as the leading goalscorer from the 2025 Guyana Elite League season and noted his experience with Waterhouse in the Jamaica Premier League. According to Werners, Waterhouse finished fourth in the 2025–2026 season.

Solomon Austin is also reported to have returned to Guyana on September 29 because he lacked the required visa to enter Puerto Rico. Austin did not feature in either match in Dominica, and his circumstances were not addressed in the federation’s statement.

The GFF’s public statement provides its account of the assistance offered after Barrow was denied entry. It does not explain the document checks made before departure, confirm whether an official accompanied the travelling players or address the allegations concerning his squad involvement.

This publication continues to await direct answers to its September 30 questions.
