The Caribbean is mourning the death of legendary calypsonian Slinger Francisco, better known as the Mighty Sparrow, who died in New York on Sunday, September 27, at the age of 91.

His family confirmed that Sparrow died peacefully following a brief illness, surrounded by loved ones. Trinidad and Tobago’s national broadcaster TTT News and the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian both reported his death on Sunday.

Sparrow, born in Grand Roy, Grenada, on July 9, 1935, was raised in Trinidad and Tobago from the age of two. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, he became one of the most influential voices in calypso and one of the Caribbean’s best-known cultural ambassadors.

The family said Sparrow’s final years included a deepening of his Christian faith. TTT reported that he had been baptised in the Seventh-day Adventist faith before his death. His family has asked the public to respect its privacy while arrangements are made to celebrate his life.

A voice that defined Caribbean culture

Sparrow’s influence extended far beyond music. His calypsos addressed politics, social conditions, race, relationships, migration, Caribbean identity and everyday life, often using humour and satire to challenge society.

CARICOM describes him as a “chantwell, warrior, prophet, satirist” and a renowned social commentator and ambassador for the Caribbean. The regional body also notes his numerous Calypso Monarch victories and his success in the King of Kings competitions.

Among his best-known recordings are “Jean and Dinah,” “Congo Man,” “Slave” and “Dan Is the Man.” His music helped carry Trinidadian calypso to audiences throughout the Caribbean and internationally.

His cultural impact was reflected in the honours bestowed on him, including the Order of the Caribbean Community (OCC). He was also recognised by Trinidad and Tobago and other institutions for his contribution to Caribbean culture.

A Caribbean icon

Sparrow’s death comes after decades in which he remained a towering figure in calypso, even as his health declined.

His passing is particularly significant in Trinidad and Tobago, where calypso has long served as both entertainment and a vehicle for social and political commentary. Sparrow’s songs became part of the cultural record of the region, documenting changing attitudes and events through satire and storytelling.

The significance of his contribution was evident even before his death. In August, a Trinidad and Tobago Carnival presentation titled “To Birdie with Love” was announced to celebrate Sparrow’s legacy during Carnival 2027. At the time, organisers described him as an artist whose work had inspired generations across the Caribbean and the world.
