Guyana’s Ceili Peterson has secured a superb bronze medal in the women’s -49kg taekwondo division at the South American Games in Santa Fe, Argentina.
Peterson launched her campaign in blistering fashion, storming past Bolivia’s Jireh Hurtado with a ruthless quarter-final display, taking the opening round 14-0 before wrapping up victory with a 9-0 win in the second.
Her pursuit of gold was halted in the semi-finals against Colombia’s Andrea Ramírez, where she was narrowly edged 1-0 in a tense first round before dropping the second 9-6.
However, the Guyanese fighter showed brilliant resilience in the bronze medal contest against Argentina’s Priscila Rodriguez. Peterson dominated the mat, taking the first round 12-6 before delivering a staggering 16-3 second round to seal an emphatic 2-0 victory and take her place on the podium.
