(Kaieteur News) – A 23-year-old labourer, known as “Savage”, was found dead with a suspected gunshot wound to the head at his C Field Reserve, Sophia home on Thursday morning.
The victim has been identified as Kurt Beckles, who lived alone in a one-flat wooden structure enclosed by a zinc fence. Police said Beckles’ body was discovered at about 8:15 a.m. on 8th October, and ranks arrived at the scene shortly after 8:30 a.m.
According to the victim’s mother, 41-year-old Danella Eastman, she was at home at about 8:00 a.m. when she received a telephone call from her former reputed husband, 57-year-old Raymond Smith. Smith reportedly told her that he had received information that her son had been shot at his home.
Eastman immediately went to Beckles’ residence, where she found him lying motionless in the yard with blood on his head. Police said Beckles was found lying on his right side, with his head facing south. He was clad in black shorts and grey boxer shorts and had what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the right side of his head.
An EMT, O. Lindie, and a team from the Central Fire Station responded to the scene. Beckles was pronounced dead by Dr. Mohan of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. Crime scene ranks processed the area but no spent shell was found. Police said CCTV cameras were seen in the area and footage is currently being reviewed. Several persons have been questioned and statements are being taken as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The area was also searched for the suspect or suspects, but no one was found. Beckles’ body was subsequently escorted to Memorial Gardens Funeral Parlour, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination with dissection.
