King Charles III

King Charles III will make a two-day State Visit to Guyana from October 29 to 30, marking 60 years of bilateral relations between Guyana and the United Kingdom and bringing the British monarch back to the country for the first time since 2000 when he was here as the Prince of Wales.

The visit, announced by Buckingham Palace yesterday, will form part of the King’s autumn tour of the Caribbean and will take place immediately after his visit to The Bahamas and ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda.

The visit is being undertaken at the invitation of President Irfaan Ali and at the request of the UK Government. On arrival, the King will meet President Ali at State House before attending a State Reception in the gardens of State House with representatives from communities across Guyana. The reception will commemorate the 60-year bilateral relationship between Guyana and the UK.

The King will also meet British businesses operating in Guyana and other local stakeholders at a reception focused on partnerships and investment. Buckingham Palace said the event will highlight the economic relationship between the two countries, describing Guyana as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

His programme will also include a visit to the Georgetown Memorial, commonly known as Rabbit Walk, where he will meet members of the Guyanese community, including veterans, and lay a wreath commemorating the shared sacrifice of British, Guyanese and other Commonwealth forces. He will be joined by a senior Guyanese government representative for the wreath-laying ceremony.

The King is also scheduled to meet elected leaders of the National Toshaos Council, which represents village leaders from more than 200 Amerindian communities across Guyana’s 10 administrative regions.

Environmental conservation and Guyana’s biodiversity will feature prominently during the visit. The King will tour a garden in Georgetown, where he will hear about botanical features and conservation efforts and meet young people involved in environmental clubs and sustainability activities. His visit will coincide with the Global Biodiversity Alliance Conference. He will also meet scientists, Indigenous community members and innovators working in biodiversity, conservation and restoration.

The programme will include a presentation on the work of the Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development, which manages approximately 371,000 hectares of tropical forest in Guyana. The King has been patron of Iwokrama since 2000, following his visit to the forest while he was Prince of Wales.

His final engagement in Guyana will be along the Georgetown seawall, where he will meet participants in the Wilton Park Commonwealth Sustainable Cities Initiative Dialogue and hear about efforts toward sustainable urbanisation ahead of CHOGM 2026.

He will also learn about mangrove restoration along Georgetown’s coastline, including efforts to replant mangroves to help protect the coast and support wildlife.

The Guyana visit will be part of an eight-day autumn tour by the King and Queen, running from October 27 to November 4. The King will first visit The Bahamas from October 27 to 29 before travelling to Guyana. He and Queen Camilla will then travel to Antigua and Barbuda, where they will attend CHOGM 2026 from November 1 to 4.

The King, who is Head of the Commonwealth, will participate in events bringing together leaders, young people, businesses and civil society representatives from the 56 Commonwealth member countries.

CHOGM 2026 will be held in St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, under the theme, “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”
