(Kaieteur News) – Golf continues to make significant strides in Guyana’s education system, with 302 Guyanese secondary school students choosing Golf as their Physical Education elective at the 2026 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.
The students produced an outstanding 98% Grade One pass rate, continuing a remarkable trend of academic success since Golf was introduced as a CSEC Physical Education elective in 2022.
Anna Regina Secondary School emerged as the school with the largest number of students electing to pursue Golf, highlighting the growing popularity of the sport outside of Georgetown and demonstrating the expanding national reach of the school golf programme.
GGA President Aleem Hussain said the 2026 results demonstrate what can happen when students are given access to quality coaching, facilities and a structured pathway to learn the game, “We are extremely proud of these 302 students and the 98% Grade One success rate. It is evidence that our young people are embracing golf, developing discipline and confidence, and recognizing that golf can be part of their educational and professional future.”
He added, ” GGA’s vision has always been to take golf beyond its traditional boundaries. When we started developing school golf, we wanted to change the perception that golf was a sport only for a particular group of people. Today, we are seeing students from communities across Guyana choosing golf and succeeding at it. We want to see the day when every Guyanese has the opportunity to experience golf. The CSEC programme is helping us move closer to that goal.”
At the centre of Guyana’s golf development programme is the collaboration between the Guyana Golf Association, Nexgen Golf Academy and Westside Golf Course, which has helped create a pathway from the classroom to the golf course. Westside Golf Course is the only training and competition venue for young golfers, providing students with access to a modern golf facility where they can develop their skills in a practical environment.
Nexgen Golf Academy has also played a central role in introducing young people to golf through coaching, school programmes, competitions and structured player development.
The programme has expanded significantly since its early beginnings, with golf being introduced to thousands of students across Guyana and teachers receiving training to help deliver golf within the school environment.
From students picking up a golf club for the first time to young players competing at national junior tournaments, the programme is creating opportunities for persons who may never previously have considered golf.
