Trinidad and Tobago will honour calypso icon Slinger Francisco, internationally known as the Mighty Sparrow, with a state-assisted funeral and celebration of life on Friday, October 16, as the Caribbean prepares to pay tribute to one of its most influential musical pioneers.

The farewell will bring together family members, cultural practitioners, public officials and admirers to celebrate the life and legacy of the performer whose music carried Caribbean stories, struggles and humour to audiences around the world.

Sparrow died in New York on September 27 at the age of 91. His remains were returned to Trinidad and Tobago on October 6, accompanied by his son, Cyril Sancho Francisco, and received at Piarco International Airport by Culture Minister Michelle Benjamin and other officials.

Public viewing sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, at the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts in San Fernando, and Wednesday, October 14, at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) in Port of Spain. Both sessions run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., allowing members of the public to pay their respects.

At the request of the Francisco family, mourners have been asked not to take photographs or record videos during the viewings.

The main farewell programme on Friday will begin with a procession at 10 a.m. from Independence Square in Port of Spain. The procession will travel along Frederick Street before concluding at NAPA, where a tribute programme is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Members of the public are also expected to have an opportunity to watch the proceedings at the Grand Stand at Queen’s Park Savannah.

The Government, through the Ministry of Culture and Community Development, is coordinating the arrangements with Sparrow’s family.

Born in Grenada and raised in Trinidad from early childhood, Sparrow rose to become one of the most celebrated figures in calypso, earning the enduring title “Calypso King of the World.” His career spanned more than seven decades, during which he used sharp wit, infectious rhythms and incisive social commentary to address politics, race, love and everyday Caribbean life.

His music helped take calypso beyond the region, establishing him as a defining voice of Caribbean identity and cultural expression. His contribution was recognised through numerous honours, including Trinidad and Tobago’s Order of the Republic in 2014.

As the region prepares to say goodbye, Sparrow’s passing marks the loss of a towering cultural figure whose songs chronicled generations of Caribbean experience. His voice may have fallen silent, but his music and influence endure across the islands and throughout the global Caribbean diaspora.
