Residents in Corentyne communities are pointing to increased employment, major infrastructure projects and improvements to public spaces as signs of growing economic activity and development across Region Six.
Vice-Chairman of the #52–#63 Village Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), Lakhram Singh, on Wednesday said the expansion of employment opportunities, including part-time jobs, is providing additional support to families.
“We have a lot of part time workers that we never had before in the previous administration. These workers are working and they are contributing to their family’s livelihood and their children’s well-being,” Singh said.
His comments come as several major developments are taking place across Region Six, including investments in infrastructure, agriculture, road and drainage works, housing and other projects aimed at expanding economic activity and improving living conditions.

According to Singh, ongoing coastal protection works along the Corentyne, including the construction of rip-rap from Number 58 Village towards Number 65 Koker, are projects undertaken by the government and are expected to improve the livelihood of residents.
“The government is spending billions of dollars on that rip rap there – infrastructure all the way from #58 Village coming all the way, this will go to #65 koker, that is to cushion anytime the high tide comes into the inland. That is a protection,” he said.
For Singh, these improvements are not unnoticed. He said the development within the region has also encouraged persons to visit the reigon more often. The recreational spaces are also being developed and sports is expected to become a massive new tourism product within the region with the new stadium at Palmyra. But the massive infrastructure isn’t the only development for sport.
“A lot of grounds have been beautified through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport all through the Corentyne, that is development we are seeing,” Singh said.
Singh said the combination of employment, infrastructure and public investments is contributing to visible changes, while the wider investments taking place across Region Six are creating the conditions for increased economic activity and opportunities.
