(Kaieteur News) – One mother tell dem boys how she nearly forget she daughter running race when she notice a young man watching the sports.
But he wasn’t watching the race. He wasn’t watching the high jump. He was watching the girls. Every time one of the schoolgirls pass, he had something to say.
The mother move closer to she daughter.
This is exactly why every year dem boys does warn parents when school sports season come around. Don’t just send yuh children to school sports and believe everybody there come to watch sports. School sports does attract parents, teachers, old students and supporters. But it also attracts some school sports hawks. Dem boys pass by one secondary school sports and see plenty young men hanging around outside. Some in cars, some on motorbikes, leaning around the gate and throwing nice words at the young schoolgirls as they pass.
One even get vex when dem boys holler at him. He start behaving like he wanted to square up. But dem boys seh, why you getting vex when somebody ask what you doing around schoolgirls? If you come to watch sports, go inside and watch sports. If you come to support the school, support the school.
But if you done leave school long time and you spending the afternoon hanging around the gate, watching young girls and trying to make conversation with them, somebody got to ask: “Boss, wha’ you doing here?” And is de Po Po should be asking those questions. That is why dem boys does tell parents every year: accompany yuh children. It don’t matter if the child is 12, 14, 16 or 17. Don’t assume because it is school sports that everybody there has good intentions.
The police also need to start paying more attention to school sports. Not only to stop people from stealing phones and bags, but to keep an eye on the grown men who does gather around the gates.
School sports should be about talent, competition, school pride and parents cheering for their children. It should not become hunting ground for grown men looking for young girls. So parents, go with yuh children. Watch the races. Watch the crowd too. Because sometimes the most dangerous hawks ain’t flying overhead. They walking around on two feet, driving car and mini-bus and riding motorbikes.
Talk half. Leff half.
