Guyana has been briefing the United States (U.S.) about a shooting incident outside the home of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) intelligence chief, senior superintendent Prem Narine who is a main witness in a court hearing for the extradition of the wealthy Guyanese father-son businessmen—Azruddin Mohamed and Nazar “Shell” Mohamed—to face trial in the U.S. for alleged financial crimes.

“The Department of Justice of the United States is being kept informed of these startling developments,” the Guyana government said in a statement.

The opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed and the two other persons—Mario Mohamed, 25, of Timehri, East Bank Demerara and Eugene Thorne, 35, a driver of Timehri, East Bank Demerara—who were in a car that passed by Mr Narine’s Barr Street residence in Kitty twice when a gunshot sound was heard, have since been arrested.

Police alleged that they found one .32 handgun in the car as well as one .32 spent shell.

Four 9mm spent shells were also recovered outside Mr Narine’s home.

Mr Mohamed and his lawyer Siand Dhurjon accused police of planting the pistol under the accelerator pedal during the search of the car.

Both Mohameds are wanted by the U.S. to face trial for alleged wire fraud, mail fraud and money laundering tied to their gold trading business.

The Guyana government said legal implications were many and far-reaching, adding that the extradition proceedings were merely preliminary to a criminal trial likely to take place in the U.S. once the Mohameds are extradited.

The government feared that the alleged shooting by someone from the vehicle in which Mr Mohamed and the two other persons were travelling near midnight Monday could have a serious impact on U.S. law enforcement.

“The ramifications here would not only affect the safety of witnesses testifying in the ongoing extradition case in Guyana, but it has implications for the criminal justice system of the United States of America (USA),” the statement reads.

The Irfaan Ali  administration also Tuesday night sought to link its concerns about the alleged shooting and firearm discovery to Mr Mohamed’s Facebook postings of photographs of Mr Narine and his family, including his minor son, with President Ali.

Mr Narine, according to the government, said it was public knowledge that as a result, he under oath, complained to the presiding magistrate that he feared for his life and the safety of his family, including his minor son.

He also said at the hearing, that the younger Mohamed is a threat to national security and that according to information acquired by the GPF, he is implicated in several alleged killings.

The Mohameds lawyer, Siand Dhurjon, told reporters earlier Tuesday that clients were innocent and he expected the director of public prosecutions (DPP) and the police legal adviser (PLA) not to recommend any charges.

“I didn’t think there could be any prospect of success if charges are laid and if they were to seek the advice of any responsible attorney of government such as the DPP or the PLA, they would be duty-bound in a properly functioning society to advise that no charges be laid for lack of evidence,” he said.

He said the Mohameds legal team was on standby to apply for bail if needed.

The government indicated that “multiple serious criminal offences arise for consideration” out of Monday night’s incident. The administration also vowed that the State would use the full force of the law to protect witnesses.”

“The investigations are ongoing by the law enforcement agencies of the State. The State has a duty to protect its justice system from interference and perversions. Witnesses are key to any justice system. They must always feel safe when they testify,” the government said.
