Kaieteur News- The Guyana Police Force (GPF) so far has failed to respond to claims that its ranks shot at the Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed while he was reportedly driving past the Head of Special Branch, Senior Superintendent Prem Narine’s home in an attempt to film what he called misuse of state resources by having heavy police security presence at his (Prem Narine) personal property.
Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed deatined at the Kitty Police Station.
Mohamed was subsequently arrested along with two others and taken to the Kitty Police Station where they remain in police custody. The Opposition Leader claims that he was assaulted during the arrest.
Kaieteur News had reached out to the Corporate Communication Unit (CCU) of the GPF for clarification on the alleged shooting and arrest Mohamed but it failed to respond.
According to information reaching Kaieteur News, Azruddin Mohamed and his companions were driving along Barr Street, Kitty, near Prem Narine’s residence, attempting to record video footage highlighting the heavy security presence at the GPF Special Branch Head’s residence.
Reports indicate that during their second pass around the block, between five to seven gunshots were fired at their vehicle. Fearing for their lives, Mohamed’s driver sped away from the area. Three bullets struck the vehicle, leaving visible ballistic damage.
At the junction of Sandy Babb Street and Vlissengen Road, the vehicle was intercepted by a police pickup. Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, who previously referred to Mohamed as a “threat to national security” during court appearances in the extradition proceedings involving Azruddin and his father, personally exited the police vehicle and allegedly discharged additional shots toward the car, and forced the occupants out at gunpoint.

Azruddin Mohamed, Eugene Thorne, and Mario Mohamed were then reportedly beaten at the scene before being taken into custody.
Following the interception, the vehicle was transported from Vlissengen Road to the Kitty Police Station by Narine and his team. Initial checks of the vehicle had yielded nothing; however, a firearm was subsequently reported found inside the vehicle after its arrival at the station. Mohamed has vehemently denied any connection to the weapon, alleging that it was planted by Narine and his officers during transit.
All three men remain detained at the Kitty Police Station with Attorney-at-Law Siand Dhurjon present.
The alleged shooting incident comes some three hours after the GPF released a statement where action was taken in connection with an ongoing investigation into reports of dangerous driving by a vehicle travelling along the Cornelia Ida Public Road, West Coast Demerara to uplift Mohamed from Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
