(Kaieteur News) – A West Coast Berbice mother is grieving the loss of her only son who perished in a Sunday evening vehicular incident on the No. 6 Village Public Road, West Coast Berbice.
Twenty-one-year-old Afridi Rahaman, of Lot 39 Bath Plantation, West Coast Berbice, died after reportedly losing control of the vehicle he was driving. According to police reports, the incident occurred at 8:20 on Sunday night.
At the time of the incident, Rahaman was behind the wheel of motor car #PAB 8323, owned by Jamaladeen Rahaman. His girlfriend, 19-year-old Parveena Brijemal, of East Canje, Berbice, was in the car with him in the front passenger seat.
Preliminary investigations disclosed that the now dead Rahaman was heading west along the southern side on No. 6 Public Road. While negotiating a right turn, he lost control of his vehicle and ended up on the northern side of the road where the vehicle toppled several times and came to rest in a trench positioned on the northern side of the road.
Rahaman and Brijemal both received injuries as a result of the collision, but Rahaman was rendered unconscious due to the impact, while Brijemal sustained comparatively minor injuries. With the help of public-spirited residents, the couple was removed from the vehicle.
They were both taken to the Bath Regional Hospital. Rahaman was seen and examined by a doctor on duty and pronounce dead on arrival. His girlfriend was placed on observation and was subsequently discharged after being treated for her injuries.
At her home on Monday, Rahaman’s mother, Waheeda Rahaman told reporters that she had attended a wake on Sunday evening after her son left with his girlfriend to go for a drive and to purchase Church’s chicken. She said that he asked her several times to accompany him, but she would turn down the offer as she opted to go to the wake instead.
“I went wake house and I left and come home. My opposite neighbor come over and tell me ‘Aunty, yuh hear Afridi get accident?’ I tell her no. Then I call a taxi and went to the accident place but they already left and gone with him to the hospital. When I went to the hospital, I see him in a stretcher. I can’t believe that is my son lie down there. That is my only son,” she expressed in tears.
She said she observed blood on his head. Her daughter-in-law related to her that he encountered difficulty with the steering, which might have prompted the vehicle to topple.
As she was ready to leave the wake, she tried numerous times to make contact with the couple, but to no avail. The final detail communicated to her from them was that they were at the New Amsterdam’s Church’s branch, after the Rosignol branch was already closed.
“I average a time when they would finish, to tell them come pick me up to come home. I keep calling their phone. I call he phone, I call her phone, all two of them phone turn off. I got no response. I make many calls to them. I got worried.”
Afridi was the lone male among her four children. He was a mechanic for approximately six years. His mother shared that plans were being put together for his and Brijemal’s wedding that had been scheduled for December.
His sister told Kaieteur News that the family’s pain is compounded by the fact that persons are peddling inaccuracies surrounding her brother’s accident. She sought to dispel the idea that her brother was drunk-driving and speeding.
“My brother, he wasn’t drinking. He was very well sober. I saw some comments on Facebook and it was very disturbing. My brother wasn’t speeding. There were persons that were behind him, they said that he wasn’t speeding. We really don’t know what happened but he wasn’t speeding.”
His mother reinforced that position by stating that her son never consumed alcohol.
Meanwhile, they disclosed that his girlfriend was hit to her stomach and back, and has some bruises on her hand. She had no internal injuries, but was placed on moderate medication.
According to the family, she too confirmed that Rahaman was not speeding.
