Jamual John receives his cash prize after winning the feature 20-lap Open race of the inaugural Alanzo Greaves Memorial Cycling Classic.

Jamual John waited patiently before launching a powerful final sprint to defeat Alexander Leung in the feature Open race at yesterday’s inaugural Alanzo Greaves Memorial cycling meet.

Leung led for most of the 20-lap criterium race at the inner circuit of the National Park and collected several sprint prizes along the way. However, John conserved his energy before using his experience and strength to take control at the finish.

Roy Mangru (centre) won the Masters 35-plus race ahead of Robin Persaud and Segun Hubbard.

The pair formed part of a five-man leading group that also included Alex Mendes, Aaron Newton and Ajani Cutting. While Leung drove the pace, John remained settled in the middle of the pack and waited until the closing stages to make his move.

Alexander Leung secured the Junior title while Tristan Jaichan (right) placed second and Kevon Stephens (left) finished third.

Leung was unable to match John’s finishing power and settled for second, while Mendes crossed the line third. Newton and Cutting finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

The victory completed a double for John, who also won the 10-lap Elite race ahead of Newton and Paul DeNobrega.

Mark Spencer (centre) topped the Masters 50-plus category with Ray Harlequin and Deon David completing the podium.

Despite missing out in the Open race, Leung secured the Junior title. Tristan Jaichan placed second and Kevon Stephens finished third.

Roy Mangru won the Masters 35-plus race ahead of Robin Persaud and Segun Hubbard, while Mark Spencer topped the Masters 50-plus category. Ray Harlequin and Deon David completed that podium.

In the female category, Tandeia Noel defeated Alicia Benjamin and Rebecca Damon. Tyrone Hamilton won the Category Four contest ahead of Leon Koulen and Carlos Mendonca.

The younger riders were also given an opportunity to compete. Cadeem Bascom won the BMX Boys Under-8 race, while Arianna Johnson claimed the corresponding girls’ event.

The BMX 9–12 titles went to Josiah Hoyte and Delisa Luke. Prince Johnson and Jaden Crawford completed the boys’ podium, while Jamelia Samuels and Denika Stephenson placed second and third among the girls.

Joshua Holder won the BMX Boys 13–15 category ahead of Jamar Samuels and Emboyo Crawford. Shaniah Johnson took first place in the girls’ division, with Brittany Crawford finishing second.

The inaugural meet attracted more than 40 cyclists across the senior, junior and BMX categories despite the scorching conditions at the National Park.
