ExxonMobil Guyana has announced that it will soon undertake pipeline maintenance activities offshore of Crane, West Coast Demerara. Those activities are in relation to the gas pipeline that was laid by the company for the gas-to-shore project two years ago.
In a statement, Exxon said the work will address what it described as a “finding” on a near-shore section of the pipeline identified by inspection activities earlier this year. The company said it is part of its commitment to maintaining the safety, integrity and reliability of the infrastructure.
The ExxonMobil company would not offer details about the “finding”, but indicated that further testing and evaluation will be done to confirm the exact nature of the issue.
The company explained that maintenance activities are scheduled to commence on October 14, 2026, and are expected to continue until around December 1, 2026. The work is being conducted in accordance with international standards and will help ensure the pipeline’s long-term integrity, the company said.
It was explained that the pipeline is currently pressurised with inert gas (nitrogen) and is not yet in operation, and as a result, it does not pose a risk to the public or the environment.
“We aim to complete this work before startup of Gas-to-Energy operations to minimize potential for maintenance interruptions in the future”, the company said.
ExxonMobil Guyana also stated that it is coordinating with relevant stakeholders regarding the activities, and a marine notice containing information for mariners operating in the area will be issued by MARAD.
ExxonMobil Guyana said it remains committed to conducting its operations safely, responsibly and in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
Back in July when the Opposition Leader raised concern about an issue with the pipeline, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) disclosed that a “slight anomaly” was observed on the gas pipeline, but rejected claims that the US$1 Billion gas pipeline was ruptured.
