Mae’s School is charting new territory in Guyanese cricket history by becoming the first educational institution to enter a senior county cricket tournament, according to the Demerara Cricket Board.
Through a landmark collaboration with D&R Construction and Machinery Rental, the newly formed Mae’s Spartan franchise has officially joined the lineup for the upcoming DCB T10 Tournament.
Unveiled during a presentation ceremony on the lawns of Mae’s School, the partnership has been widely praised as a progressive leap forward, signalling a deeper integration of educational bodies and private enterprise in local cricket development.
The high-stakes T10 competition is scheduled for November 22 at the LBI Ground, bringing together an eight-team field to showcase elite local talent.
Mae’s Spartan is the sixth confirmed franchise, locking in its spot alongside Premier Insurance, Mike’s Tynor XI, Navin’s Construction Lusignan Bulls, Young Rivals, and the Guyana Police Force.
Speaking at the launch, DCB Vice President Puneet Jaigopaul highlighted the collaboration’s significance, noting that the initiative paves the way for broader institutional involvement in organised cricket while keeping youth and female cricket development across Demerara at the core of its mission.
The team also commended David Sugrim, owner of D&R Construction and Machinery Rental, for his investment and confidence in building a sustainable cricketing framework.
Sugrim echoed this enthusiasm, expressing his excitement about backing Mae’s School and highlighting the institution’s active commitment to encouraging students toward athletic excellence.
On matchday, action at the LBI Ground will begin at 10:00h, with games continuing under lights, and admission will be G$1,000. Strict tournament guidelines require each franchise to assemble a 15-player squad with at least 12 players from Demerara and no more than three from outside the county.
Furthermore, squads must include two Under-19 players, with at least one required to feature in the starting XI, ensuring a clear pathway for emerging youth talent as the DCB drives forward its long-term developmental goals. (Modified Press Release)
