The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) commemorated its 69th anniversary with a route march through Georgetown on Monday, bringing together firefighters and other ranks in a display of discipline and pride.

The parade commenced at the Square of the Revolution. It proceeded along Brickdam, where the ranks paid the traditional “Eyes Right” salute to Home Affairs Minister, Oneidge Walrond before concluding at Ashmin’s Building on High Street.

Speaking to members of the media following the parade, Walrond praised the professionalism, discipline, and resilience of the men and women of the Fire Service, noting that their willingness to risk their lives to protect others deserves national recognition.

Having witnessed firefighters responding to emergencies firsthand, the Minister said the anniversary was more than a ceremonial occasion. It was an opportunity to recognize the sacrifices of those who routinely place themselves in danger to protect lives and property.

Beyond recognizing the sacrifices of firefighters, Minister Walrond highlighted the investments being made to support them in carrying out their duties, including the acquisition of new fire tenders, trucks, and a fireboat.

“It’s not just so we could have a glorious parade,” she remarked, explaining that the investments are aimed at reducing response times and minimising the loss of life and property.

She cited a recent fire at a children’s home in Sophia, where firefighters from the new Campbellville Fire Station arrived in under two minutes. She noted that the station’s proximity allowed for a swift response, helping to avert potentially catastrophic consequences, with no injuries reported.

The Minister also addressed the Service’s ability to contain fires, particularly in commercial areas where buildings are closely situated. Recalling a time when fires along Regent Street could spread across entire blocks, she attributed improvements in containment to better equipment, water access, and firefighting resources.

Walrond further highlighted an ongoing fire hydrant programme involving the restoration of existing hydrants and the installation of new ones as communities expand, improving access to water during firefighting operations.

While equipment and infrastructure remain important, Minister Walrond stressed that the people behind the Service remain its greatest asset. “The government has done tremendous investment in the assets, but our greatest investment has been in our young people and in the training,” she stated.

In extending anniversary greetings to the ranks, Minister Walrond reaffirmed her appreciation for their service. “Guyana is proud of our firemen and women, and we hope and pray that you continue to grow from strength to strength,” Walrond said.
