Guyanese Briton John got off to a great start in the 2026 CCU U23 hosted in the Dominican Republic.

Competing in Saturday’s individual time trial, John secured a sixth-place finish in the Elite category with a time of 46 minutes, 31.001 seconds, finishing 4 minutes and 27.762 seconds behind the event’s winner, Kaden Luke Hopkins of Bermuda (42:03.239). Nicholas Narraway, also of Bermuda, and Christopher Morales Fontán of Puerto Rico completed the Elite podium. Meanwhile, Newton clocked 49 minutes, 9.792 seconds to place fifth out of 11 finishers in the Under-23 division, building on his silver-medal performance from last year’s championships.

The time trials set the stage for Sunday’s road race, where Guyana’s full five-man squad will take to the course. National Elite road-race champion John and national Under-23 champion Ajani Cutting will lead the team, joined by Newton, Segun Hubbard, and Andre Greene.

The Guyana Cycling Federation had originally hoped to field a larger nine-man roster, but was forced to scale down after the CCU denied a request to reallocate vacant female rider spots to additional male competitors, strictly enforcing the country’s allotment of five male and five female entries.
