(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, on Thursday warned contractors undertaking clean-up works at Le Repentir Cemetery that failure to complete the projects within the stipulated timeframe will attract penalties.
During an on-site meeting with the contractors, Manickchand stressed that persons who accept government contracts must be prepared to fulfil their obligations and deliver work within the agreed timelines and to the required standards.
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, met with the contractors responsible for cleaning the Le Repentir Cemetery on Thursday.
She urged contractors who are unable to meet the deadlines not to accept the work, emphasising the importance of completing the projects on time, given their impact on citizens.
Particular attention was placed on improving access for persons visiting the cemetery to pay their respects to deceased loved ones. Manickchand noted that persons already dealing with difficult circumstances should not have to contend with poor conditions simply to reach their loved ones.
The works are expected to be completed within one week of the signing of the contracts, which is anticipated within the next 48 to 72 hours.
The minister also outlined specific requirements for the execution of the works, making it clear that no debris is to be burnt. Engineers are expected to provide further instructions on the proper removal and disposal of the waste.
Existing trees are also to be preserved as far as possible and properly maintained as part of the clean-up exercise.
A team from the ministry is expected to visit the site to identify and mark the respective lots, ensuring that each contractor is clear about the specific area for which they are responsible.
The contractors were selected from among persons registered on the Government of Guyana’s National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) portal for small contracts. The system has already provided employment opportunities to more than 4,000 persons.
Manickchand reiterated that accountability, timely execution and consideration for the people who use these spaces must remain central to the delivery of the works.
